About Prof. Reif
Prof. Dr. Andreas Reif studied medicine at Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg, where he earned his doctorate summa cum laude at the Institute of Pharmacology. Always interested in neuroscience, his enthusiasm for psychiatry was awakened during his studies. He therefore began his specialist training as a psychiatrist at the local Clinic for Psychiatry, Psychosomatics, and Psychotherapy, first under Prof. H. Beckmann, then under Prof. J. Deckert. He began his scientific career in the Molecular Psychiatry working group of Prof. Dr. K.-P. Lesch, where he focused primarily on the genetics of mental illness.
After completing his habilitation in 2009 on the role of NO synthase in mental illness and being appointed senior physician, he led his own working group on psychiatric neurobiology and gradually established a clinical focus on bipolar disorders. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed W2 professor of psychiatry and psychotherapy, as well as laboratory director and deputy clinic director. Since August 2014, Prof. Reif has been director of the Clinic for Psychiatry, Psychosomatics, and Psychotherapy at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main.
Prof. Reif's clinical interests primarily include affective disorders—in particular, suicide prevention, treatment-resistant depression, and bipolar disorder—as well as adult ADHD. In the field of depression, he has been recognized by Stern and Focus as a top physician in the field of depression. His scientific work in the field of translational psychiatry also focuses on these diagnoses and follows the idea of precision psychiatry, i.e., using objective criteria (“theranostic biomarkers”) to provide the right therapy at the right time to the right patient. The aim of his scientific efforts is, on the one hand, prevention and early intervention and, on the other hand, personalized medicine through the necessary identification of pathophysiological mechanisms. The rapid translation of new diagnostic and therapeutic methods of various modalities (i.e., medication, neurostimulation, psychotherapy) is of particular concern to him. In addition, he is socially engaged, particularly in the area of depression and suicide prevention, for example in the Alliance Against Depression Frankfurt/Main and the German Depression Aid and Suicide Prevention Foundation. He is a coordinator and steering group member in the guidelines on depression (NVL), ADHD, and dealing with suicidal behavior, among others.
Prof. Reif has published more than 700 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and has a Google Scholar h-index of 108 (September 2025). He has raised over €40 million in third-party funding; in particular, he is head of the DynAMoND research network, co-coordinator of the LOEWE Center DYNAMIC, and deputy spokesperson for the TRR SFB 379.
Prof. Reif is active in several international research networks, including IMpACT, ENIGMA, ConLiGen, and the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (PGC). In addition, he has been a member of the board of the DGPPN since 2017 and will be president of the ECNP from 2025 to 2028.
As part of his medical training to become a specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy, Prof. Reif is authorized to provide full training (four years).
