Our group explores genetic variants and pharmacokinetic factors to improve drug levels and minimize side effects of psychoactive medications. By tailoring treatments to individual genetic profiles, we aim for better efficacy and safety. Our research focuses on drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion, seeking to enhance therapeutic outcomes and advance personalized medicine.

About the Research Group

Our group investigates the effect of genetic variants and pharmakokinetic factors on drug levels, efficacy and side effect to enhance the efficacy and tolerability of of psychoharmacologic drugs. Pharmacogenetics seeks to tailor treatments to individual genetic makeup. This personalized approach promises enhanced drug efficacy and safety while minimizing adverse reactions. Pharmacokinetics research, on the other hand, focuses on understanding how the body processes drugs. By studying factors like absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion, we aim to optimize drug dosing regimens. This knowledge can lead to more precise dosage adjustments based on factors such as age, gender, ethnicity and genetic variations, ultimately improving therapeutic outcomes. Also, drug interactions play a vital role in the pharmacokinetics of a drug. How can they be avoided? What databases can be used and how can they be optimized? Overall, the goals our research group include maximizing drug efficacy, minimizing adverse effects, and advancing personalized medicine to provide tailored treatments that maximize patient benefits.

Current Projects and Studies

PSY-KOMO

The PSY-KOMO project is investigating the reduction of somatic morbidity and mortality among people with mental illnesses through regional networks, health coaches, and screenings by psychiatrists.

Duration: 2020-2026

Fact-PGx

Fact-PGx investigates the barriers to implementing pharmacogenetic testing in hospitals and the impact of the test results on the medication (including serum concentrations) of people with depression.

Duration: 2021-2026

Cooperations: Universität Würzburg

PharmGenTRD

On the one hand, the PharmGenTRD study is intended to contribute to investigating the course of the disease in treatment-resistant depression as well as drug tolerability and efficacy depending on the pharmacogenetic genotype. On the other hand, the innovative method of “long read sequencing” for pharmacogenetic testing will be further improved and its advantages and disadvantages compared to classic genotyping methods from commercial tests will be investigated in a clinical sample. Furthermore, insights into the microbiome as a function of genotype and antidepressant taken are to be gained.

Duration: 2024-2027

CLOVER

This project aims to investigate the correlation between clozapine side effects and genetic factors, serum concentration, age, ethnicity, and gender, to improve the safety and individualization of clozapine treatment. Clozapine is a highly effective antipsychotic that is rarely used due to its side effects in cases of treatment-resistant schizophrenia.
